Photographer Spotlight #1

January 20th, 2009 by admin

I’ve been wanting to feature my favorite BJD photographers for a while now. These three are wonderful artists with great skill and ideas and I really look up to them. Take a look!

Tannie

Tannie’s Miyu, Wednesday, is so photogenic, probably because she is themed and styled so perfectly from her colors to her poses. Tannie knows how to make her versatile across a variety of shots and give her that lifelike appearance, despite her (lovely) doll-like appearance.

Nezumi

Another Miyu, another great shoot. This shoot by Nezumi just blows me away. The working of lights and darks, the simplicity of the set but complexity of details, the strange and paradoxal outfit, I just love this shoot. She’s a corrupted but beautiful ballerina in a galaxy of manufactured dreams.

Hiritai

Hiritai has taken what I consider to be some of the best artistic BJD photos I’ve ever seen. With obvious control over the camera and armed with different ideas, her photos make you think differently about dolls and what they can be in front of the camera. I love how willing she is to take risks with her dolls, although it sometimes scares me (see second photo below, lol).

If you would like to be featured as an artist or photographer, send me a link to your stuff so I can consider you! I always love looking at new and interesting things!

Hazy in the Garden

I totally forgot to post this shoot from November! I was finally able to take photos of Hazy outdoors and took advantage of the beautiful colors in the garden.

Current Obsessions

January 15th, 2009 by admin

Aside from Hazy, who is by far my dream doll over all others, these are the dolls I’m currently obsessed with and would absolutely love to have in my collection.

Supia Rosy

She’s just got that “wow” factor. She photographs incredibly and probably forces double takes in real life. The tanned resin is the best color I’ve ever seen in a photo so hopefully she looks the same in person.

Any doll by Limhwa

The regular and half elf 57cm girls are beautiful and Mano is handsome but Luna is quickly rising to the top of my list.

Amazing Limhwa Tanned Half Elf owned by Riddley50.

Limhwa Luna

Soom Lupin

Of course Lupin is on this list. He’s my next doll after all! He has such personality built right into to mold that I can’t help but notice him. He’s not for everyone, for he is so specific in his mold that he probably doesn’t have the versatility of more generic dolls, but that specificity is what makes him so believable as a personality.

Souldoll

There are a lot of Soudoll dolls I like, including Gisele and the Korean trio Tae, Kanguk, and Chiru. I was crazy about them when they came out and I still love them and wish there were more owners out there but they just don’t fit what I want right now.

Souldoll Gisele

Chiru, Tae, Kanguk.

Can you tell that I love realistic and mature looking dolls? I love these for their molds. I also adore highly stylized and unrealistic dolls but they have to be themed or styled well. The ones listed above don’t need any customization because they are basically set up for the customer and the customer must appreciate them as an artist’s creation.

Late to the Holidays

January 3rd, 2009 by admin

Happy Holidays, everyone! Now that DoA’s contest is over, I can finally post my real winter photoshoot. The first photo won 2nd place in the Holiday Themed Photo Contest. Yay! I’m so happy! Enjoy!

And a bit of a treat! I don’t usually share how I do my setups, but this one was just so strange. In order to get some of the shots (not the first or last ones, but the others), I set up a cardboard house. I cut a small hole in the top just big enough for the camera lens to fit through. This way I was able to get multiple second exposures with very little post-production work. Here’s what it looked like before it fell apart:
