Finally got the chance to take some decent photos of Soah. Enjoy!

Ready For My Close Up

October 25th, 2009 by admin

Finally!! I actually managed to take some artistic photos (my photos as of late have been for documentary purposes or just messing around). This is also the first time I’ve used my old SLR in over a year and I remember why I like it so much. Some of these are more on the artistic/abstract side but I couldn’t contain myself when I learned how to do a “hyper-macro” trick on my camera.

Enjoy this loose story of awakening, fresh and simple.

Good morning.

Good morning, YeunJa.

Good morning, Daigo.

Heh.

Mine.

Her Perspective

June 20th, 2009 by admin

When I shot these, YeunJa really looked like she was just playing with Daigo, happy with catching him in her trap and even using him. She looked conniving, sneaky, and almost as if she was cheating on him. When I brought up the pictures for editing, though, she looked so sweet and in love. I wonder what that could mean for their relationship?

I hope you can tell from the photos that these two are truly special to me.

Wonderfully Styled

May 18th, 2009 by admin

The most believable and lovable thing about a doll to me is not any one feature but instead the styling and theming of the doll, or the bringing together of all elements into one complete package. Sure, I prefer realistic dolls, but good styling transcends all my preferences and just makes me stop and say “wow.” From gorgeous faceups to just the right color wigs to incredible outfits, these dolls exude personality, tell a story, transcend into art, or just make my mouth water.

Zagzagael’s SD17 Alain

A great mature sculpt is turned into something incredible through Armeleia’s masterful faceup skills, a perfect wig, and Zagzagael’s photography work. Rarely do we get to see freckles done this realistically and a face so clean and natural.

michiko88’s Unoa Lusis

From her black and white ensemble to that dash of blue that perfectly matches her eyes and eye shadow, this Lusis is the picture of a stylish young lady. She’s the type of doll that makes me instantly want to emulate her style, although I know the style is uniquely hers.

belladonna’s Migidoll Ryu (Jared)

Having now owned a Ryu, I truly see what a versatile mold he is. However, Jared’s mold and faceup are not what define him. His hair, clothes, mold, faceup, eyes, and even the angle at which he is photographed as well as the setting all work together to bring out his style and personality. I’ve seen a lot of rock/emo/punk BJDs out there but Jared brings something fresh to the table with his Native American/slightly hippie twist and gorgeous skin.

Daigo’s Head is Done!!

April 18th, 2009 by admin

What can I say about this head other than just WOW. I asked Helene to paint him because I thought her past works were great. Well if her past works are great then this work is incredible, in my opinion. I don’t have eyes or a wig for him yet (or even a matching body for that matter) but I’ll post a couple of Helene’s official photos. You can visit her blog for the complete set.

With this head, Helene went from being one of my favorite artists straight up to my favorite. She has so much talent, does quality work, she’s timely, super nice and understanding, great at interpreting molds, and she seems to really love doing it the whole way through. I highly reccommend her for anyone thinking about getting a Naturally Nude faceup. (Now I just wish the post office cared enough to not throw the box against a wall repeatedly until the sides started splitting open.)

Photographer Spotlight #1

January 20th, 2009 by admin

I’ve been wanting to feature my favorite BJD photographers for a while now. These three are wonderful artists with great skill and ideas and I really look up to them. Take a look!

Tannie

Tannie’s Miyu, Wednesday, is so photogenic, probably because she is themed and styled so perfectly from her colors to her poses. Tannie knows how to make her versatile across a variety of shots and give her that lifelike appearance, despite her (lovely) doll-like appearance.

Nezumi

Another Miyu, another great shoot. This shoot by Nezumi just blows me away. The working of lights and darks, the simplicity of the set but complexity of details, the strange and paradoxal outfit, I just love this shoot. She’s a corrupted but beautiful ballerina in a galaxy of manufactured dreams.

Hiritai

Hiritai has taken what I consider to be some of the best artistic BJD photos I’ve ever seen. With obvious control over the camera and armed with different ideas, her photos make you think differently about dolls and what they can be in front of the camera. I love how willing she is to take risks with her dolls, although it sometimes scares me (see second photo below, lol).

If you would like to be featured as an artist or photographer, send me a link to your stuff so I can consider you! I always love looking at new and interesting things!
